What is Computer Forensics?
Computer forensics is the collection, preservation, analysis and presentation of computer-related evidence. In summary, it helps determine the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY and HOW of criminal, civil or personal misconduct when it has involved digital media.
Computer forensics is making an important transition from a “black art,” relegated to a select few experts, to an essential component of information security. A recent study done by the University of California at Berkley indicates that over 93% of information produced is in digital format. The same study also noted that 85% of all criminal, civil, and company violations leave what is called a “digital footprint”.
Organizations with 25 or more employees experience a daily occurrence of potentially devastating violations. A startling fact tells us 80% of all security incidents happen from within. Is your organization protected?
In the field of computer forensics, crucial data can be gathered from dozens of sources. These sources may include computer messaging, e-mails, the Internet, tapes, CDs, disks, or printouts made by a specific computer. The proper collection and analysis of computer evidence through accepted computer forensic protocols is a critical component to any internal investigation or audit.
Evidence can be sought in a wide range of computer incidents, including but not limited to:
Theft of Trade Secrets (client, customer or employee lists)
Employee Misconduct
Credit Card Fraud
Financial Crimes
Embezzlement (money or information)
Economic Crimes
Harassment
Child Pornography
Major Crimes
Identity Theft
Unfaithful spouse or significant other
Simply stated, computer forensics can be used to investigate any crime or incident directly or indirectly related to a computer.
